WHEN WILDFIRES TORE THROUGH THE SMOKIES IN 2016, DOLLY PARTON PROMISED DIRECT AID — BUT HER FINAL SURPRISE CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR NEARLY 900 FAMILIES.
In late November 2016, severe drought and high winds fueled catastrophic wildfires that swept across Sevier County, Tennessee. The flames ripped through Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, claiming 14 lives, injuring nearly 200 people, and damaging or destroying more than 2,400 structures across the mountain landscape.
Within 48 hours of the blaze being contained, Dolly Parton responded directly to the community where she was born and raised. Through the Dollywood Foundation, she established the My People Fund with a straightforward commitment: 1,000 dollars in cash every month for six months to any family whose primary residence was rendered uninhabitable.
To fund the massive undertaking, Dolly organized and hosted the three-hour *Smoky Mountains Rise: A Benefit for the My People Fund* telethon in Nashville on December 13, 2016. Joined by country music peers including Reba McEntire, Kenny Rogers, Alison Krauss, and Chris Stapleton, the broadcast raised over 9 million dollars in a single evening.
The Dollywood Foundation covered all administrative expenses, ensuring that every dollar contributed went directly into the hands of impacted residents. There were no bureaucratic delays, complex applications, or spending restrictions placed on how recipients used the funds to secure food, rent, or basic necessities.
During the monthly distribution events in Sevier County, Dolly frequently arrived in person, bypassing formal barriers to hand out checks, embrace former neighbors, and listen to their accounts of survival. For families navigating temporary shelters and sudden displacement, the reliable monthly support provided essential stability.
When the final scheduled distribution arrived in May 2017, donations had substantially exceeded initial projections. Dolly walked into the distribution center and made an unexpected announcement: the sixth and final monthly payment would increase from 1,000 dollars to 5,000 dollars for every qualifying household.
That final adjustment brought the total direct cash assistance to 10,000 dollars per family across nearly 900 households. The remaining surplus, totaling several million dollars, was transferred directly to the Mountain Tough Recovery Team to support long-term casework, debris clearance, and permanent home construction in the months that followed.
For the mountain communities of East Tennessee, the initiative went far beyond emergency relief. A hometown daughter stood beside the people who shaped her life, delivering immediate trust and tangible help when they needed it most.
