Seven months after Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher exchanged vows beside Lake Oconee in Georgia, a phone call from the Ottawa Senators general manager ended the newlyweds’ cross-border marriage and sent Fisher to the Nashville Predators.
That trade in February 2011 solved a distance problem that had followed the couple since late 2008, when Underwood’s bassist, Mark Childers, introduced the Oklahoma-born singer to the Canadian hockey center backstage after her concert in Ottawa. After a year of flying back and forth between Tennessee and Ontario, Fisher proposed in December 2009, setting in motion plans for a summer wedding that both wanted to keep out of view of tabloid cameras.
For the weekend of July 10, 2010, the couple booked the entire Ritz-Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Georgia, replacing the resort’s rugs with custom mats bearing their initials and waiting until the last possible moment to give their 250 guests the exact destination. Even with security boats patrolling the shoreline and news helicopters circling overhead, the evening inside the lakeside tent remained focused on family and the Christian faith they shared.
Just before the ceremony began, Fisher surprised Underwood with a forty-carat diamond and white gold flower tiara to wear in her hair. Her father, Stephen Underwood, then walked her down a petal-lined aisle in a custom Chantilly lace Monique Lhuillier gown stitched with more than three thousand handmade silk organza and crystal flowers.
Pastor Brandon officiated the service while classical pieces by Bach and Wagner played and scripture passages chosen by the bride and groom were read aloud. Underwood’s rat terrier, Ace, trotted down the aisle wearing a crystal-embellished pink-and-black tuxedo, while friends including Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and American Idol judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson watched from the seats.
Later that night, Underwood gave her husband a surprise of her own during the reception. Alongside a menu featuring vegetarian butternut squash ravioli and vanilla buttercream cake, she brought in contemporary Christian singer Brandon Heath to perform their first dance song, Love Never Fails, live in front of their guests.
Once the honeymoon ended, the newlyweds returned to living in two different countries as the autumn NHL season began. Fisher spent eleven seasons with the Ottawa Senators, and the sudden February 2011 trade to Nashville allowed the couple to live under one roof full-time for the first time.
That same year, they purchased roughly four hundred acres of rural land in Franklin, Tennessee, with plans to build a permanent family farm away from the spotlight. As Underwood continued recording multi-platinum albums and headlining arena tours, Fisher became team captain of the Predators and helped lead the franchise to its first Stanley Cup Final in 2017 before retiring from professional hockey in 2018.
Their family grew during those Nashville years, beginning with the birth of their first son, Isaiah Michael Fisher, in February 2015. Expanding their family proved much harder over the next three years, as Underwood suffered three miscarriages in 2017 and early 2018 before giving birth to their second son, Jacob Bryan Fisher, in January 2019.
Around the time Jacob arrived, the couple completed their house on the Franklin property, turning the acreage into a working homestead with horse stables, sheep, cows, donkeys, a chicken coop, orchards, and a greenhouse where Underwood grows fruit and vegetables year-round. In 2025, Underwood returned to American Idol as a full-time judge, sitting at the same table where her career began twenty years earlier while commuting back to Tennessee between tapings.
More than a decade and a half after a hockey player handed a diamond tiara to a bride under a white tent in Georgia, the two of them were raising two boys and tending garden beds and livestock together on four hundred acres of Tennessee farmland.
