In April 2022, days after laying his fifty-eight-year-old wife, Mary Jane Thomas, to rest in Paris, Tennessee, Hank Williams Jr. released a rare personal statement and a series of family photographs looking back on their thirty-seven years together.
In that April 4 message to fans, the seventy-two-year-old singer thanked the public for their prayers and charities made in her memory, writing directly about the woman who had shared his life from a 1985 Washington concert to the quiet pastures of Montana and western Tennessee.
Thomas had died suddenly on March 22, 2022, in Florida after a blood clot led to a collapsed lung following an elective surgical procedure. Her death arrived less than twenty-two months after the couple lost their twenty-seven-year-old daughter, Katherine Diana Williams-Dunning, in a June 13, 2020 single-vehicle rollover crash on U.S. Highway 79 near Paris, Tennessee.
Following private funeral services overseen by McEvoy Funeral Home in Henry County, where her brother Andy Thomas and her widowed son-in-law Tyler Dunning served among the pallbearers, Thomas was buried beside Katherine in Tennessee.
For decades, the public knew Williams as one of country music’s roughest figures, wearing dark sunglasses, a low-crowned cowboy hat, and a full beard to cover the facial scars from his nearly fatal 1975 fall on Ajax Mountain. Yet the April 2022 statement set aside that stage persona to recount the private world he and Thomas had built away from Nashville.
Their story began backstage in Washington state in 1985, when Thomas was a twenty-one-year-old Hawaiian Tropic model and former Miss Spruce Creek High School from Daytona Beach, Florida. Unfazed by his outlaw reputation, she married him on July 2, 1990, at the University Congregational Church in Missoula, Montana.
Rather than settling along Music Row, the couple split their time between a 4,000-acre ranch in the Bitterroot Valley near Victor, Montana, and their rural property near Kentucky Lake in Henry County, Tennessee. Away from tour buses and arena crowds, they raised Katherine, born in 1993, and their son Samuel, born in 1997, in quiet country communities where the children could attend local schools.
In his April tribute, Williams recalled how the former Florida cheerleader and model threw herself wholeheartedly into his outdoor lifestyle. During their years on the Montana ranch and on expeditions overseas, Thomas became a skilled big-game hunter who traveled with him on safaris across the African bush, fished high mountain streams, and once held a world hunting record of her own.
Even when the pressures of life led to a separation in 2007, the two never finalized a divorce, eventually reconciling in the years that followed and returning to the family properties they had built together.
When Katherine married Tyler Dunning in October 2015 and had two children, Beau Weston and Audrey Jane, Thomas embraced her role as “Mimi.” After the June 2020 highway accident took Katherine’s life, Williams and Thomas anchored themselves in raising and spending afternoons with those two grandchildren while supporting Sam through his own music career.
Instead of asking for flowers after Thomas’s sudden passing in March 2022, the family asked mourners to direct donations to Paris and Henry County Healthcare Foundation or to the local schools and community organizations in western Tennessee where she had spent decades raising her children.
Alongside his written memories that April, Williams shared personal snapshots spanning nearly four decades—showing the couple on African hunting grounds, relaxing on the water, and standing together at family gatherings. In those unguarded photographs, the man behind decades of rowdy anthems stood close to his wife with a quiet smile, looking out from beside the woman who now rests next to their daughter in the Tennessee soil.
