When Missy Gallimore drove out to Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee, to play a demo tape for Tim McGraw on the back of his tour bus, the couple at the center of Nashville’s biggest rumor was still deciding what their life together would sound like.
Missy, a veteran song finder married to McGraw’s producer Byron Gallimore, handed him a ballad written by Stephony Smith. Smith had penned the song in about thirty minutes at home while watching television on mute, crafting a direct confession about how falling in love changes a person from the inside out.
McGraw was living at his rural property outside Nashville while sharing the road with Faith Hill on the 1996 Spontaneous Combustion Tour. As soon as he heard the demo in the back lounge of the bus, he knew he was going to cut it for his upcoming fourth album, Everywhere, and he immediately walked the tape over to play it for Hill.
Their relationship had moved fast enough to draw plenty of skepticism along Music Row. Both singers had ended previous engagements before coming together that spring, and by October 1996 they had slipped away to Rayville, Louisiana, to get married under an oak tree in his aunt’s yard while Hill was already expecting their first child.
When McGraw entered Nashville’s LOUD Recording studio with producers Byron Gallimore and James Stroud to cut “It’s Your Love,” the track was structured primarily as a solo lead with Hill stepping in on the chorus harmonies. Yet her voice stood out so distinctly against his phrasing that the record carried the weight of a full duet, turning their private marriage into an unmistakable public statement.
By the spring of 1997, Curb Records prepared to release the ballad as the album’s lead single, and longtime country video director Sherman Halsey was brought in to shoot the accompanying visual. Hill was seven months along in her pregnancy when the cameras rolled.
Throughout the 1990s, music television almost always hid a singer’s pregnancy behind loose wardrobe, strategic props, or tight camera angles from the shoulders up. Instead, Hill walked onto Halsey’s set in a flowing black silk gown that made their expecting child the quiet centerpiece of the frame.
Behind the elegance of the finished clip, the day on set looked very much like a real third trimester. Hill was craving milkshakes throughout the shoot, and while drinking one between takes, she accidentally dropped a bit of it onto the front of her dark silk dress—a tiny stain McGraw later admitted is still visible in a few close-up shots if viewers know where to look.
When the cameras were rolling, Halsey kept the focus entirely on the two of them. While intercutting black-and-white vignettes of a young couple in the rain, he filmed McGraw resting his hand against his wife’s stomach and leaning his forehead against hers between lines.
Their daughter, Gracie Katherine, was born on May 5, 1997. One week later, on May 12, “It’s Your Love” arrived at country radio, followed two days later by the video’s premiere on CMT.
The response from listeners was immediate. Beginning June 7, the single spent six consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, becoming the first duet by a married couple to top the Nielsen BDS country airplay ranking in the 1990s. It also gave both McGraw and Hill their first top-ten pop crossover, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.
By the time the awards season arrived, the record swept the Academy of Country Music Awards for Single, Song, Video, and Vocal Event of the Year, added a Country Music Association trophy for Vocal Event, and set the stage for five No. 1 hits from McGraw’s Everywhere album.
Nearly thirty years after that spring in Nashville, the trophies and chart records remain in the history books, while the video itself endures as a three-minute family film of two newlyweds in a silk dress with a hidden milkshake stain, waiting for their first daughter to arrive.
