Seven months after a quiet winter proposal in Ontario, Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher rented out the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Georgia, and booked every room on the property so two hundred fifty family members and friends could celebrate without outside cameras.
Their path to that July 10, 2010 wedding had started with a blind date backstage in Toronto in late 2008. Underwood’s bassist, Mark Childers, knew Fisher through hockey circles and spent months encouraging the singer to meet the Ottawa Senators center during her Carnival Ride Tour.
For more than a year after that first meeting, their relationship ran across an international border. Underwood worked out of Nashville while touring arenas across the United States, and Fisher played an eighty-two-game NHL schedule based in Canada.
On December 20, 2009, Underwood flew to Ottawa for a Christmas visit and walked into the proposal Fisher had been planning with jeweler Johnathon Arndt. After Fisher got down on one knee in the snow outside his Canadian home with a yellow diamond ring, the couple waited a full day before letting any public confirmation go out.
Instead of calling reporters or posting an announcement, they spent those first hours telephoning her parents in Checotah, Oklahoma, and his family in Ontario. News only reached the public the following day after Fisher arrived at Senators practice and teammates noticed him grinning in the locker room.
When the summer wedding arrived in Georgia seven months later, the couple built the ceremony around the same family focus. Wedding planner Mindy Weiss helped organize a weekend under a tent draped with crystal chandeliers, while guests including Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Fisher’s NHL teammates gathered by the lake.
Underwood walked down the aisle in a Chantilly lace and silk organza gown custom-made by Monique Lhuillier, accompanied by her miniature pinscher, Ace, dressed in a pink tuxedo. Rather than choosing traditional recessional music, the couple arranged for classical musicians to surprise the crowd with the theme from Hockey Night in Canada as they walked back up the aisle as husband and wife.
Marriage did not immediately put them in the same city. For the first seven months after the wedding, Fisher remained under contract in Ottawa while Underwood launched her Play On Tour across North America, leaving the newlyweds to piece together time between concert routing and NHL game nights.
That distance ended on February 10, 2011, when the Ottawa Senators traded Fisher to the Nashville Predators. The move brought him to Tennessee full-time, allowing the couple to live under one roof for the first time while Nashville fans packed Bridgestone Arena in number twelve jerseys.
Over the next several years, their home outside Nashville became the center of a growing family alongside two demanding careers. Their first son, Isaiah Michael Fisher, was born in February 2015, and Fisher was named captain of the Predators before helping lead the franchise to its first Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2017.
In January 2019, the couple welcomed their second son, Jacob Bryan Fisher, following a difficult period in which Underwood later shared publicly that she had experienced three miscarriages in two years. When Underwood took the road again that May for her Cry Pretty Tour 360, both boys traveled with her on the tour bus while Fisher joined them along the route after retiring from professional hockey.
Away from the arenas, the two eventually settled on a four-hundred-acre farm in Tennessee where Underwood tends a garden and orchard and the family raises cattle, horses, and chickens. More than a decade and a half after keeping their engagement secret for twenty-four hours just to call home to Oklahoma and Ontario first, the singer and the former hockey captain still build their days around the same two families who heard the news before the rest of the world.
