Four months after 58-year-old Mary Jane Thomas died at Jupiter Medical Center on March 22, 2022, the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner released the autopsy findings that explained why a routine recovery in Florida had turned fatal overnight.
On March 21, the wife of country star Hank Williams Jr. had undergone an elective outpatient procedure in Palm Beach County that had been cleared beforehand by her local physician. Discharged the same day with normal initial vital signs, she checked into the oceanfront Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa to rest. According to the medical examiner’s report released on July 25, 2022, the procedure had inadvertently caused a perforated parietal pleura—a small puncture in the membrane surrounding the chest cavity—which triggered a gradual pneumothorax, or collapsed lung.
While her family back in Springville, Tennessee, believed she was resting comfortably near the water, the undetected internal injury progressed out of sight inside the hotel room. Around 5:00 p.m. on March 22, her surgeon, Dr. Harold Bafitis, arrived at the resort for a scheduled follow-up visit and found her sitting upright in bed as she suddenly became unresponsive. Emergency responders transported her to Jupiter Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her dead roughly an hour after she lost consciousness, and the county later ruled her death an accident.
For the 72-year-old country singer, the distance between his home in Henry County, Tennessee, and that Florida resort room carried a weight unlike any crisis his family had previously faced. Nearly five decades earlier, when Williams suffered his near-fatal fall on Montana’s Ajax Peak in August 1975, hunting companions had reached him on the mountain, and family members had remained at his hospital bedside through months of reconstructive surgeries.
That same closeness had surrounded the family on June 13, 2020, when their 27-year-old daughter, Katherine Diana Williams-Dunning, died in a single-vehicle crash while towing a boat on Highway 79 near Paris, Tennessee. Her husband, Tyler Dunning, was in the vehicle with her when the accident occurred, and her parents and brother were nearby in Tennessee to gather around the hospital and home immediately afterward.
In the twenty-one months between Katherine’s crash and that March trip to Jupiter, Mary Jane had poured her energy into looking after Katherine’s two young children. Beau Weston, born in January 2015, and Audrey Jane, born in September 2018, knew their grandmother simply as “Mimi.”
Mary Jane, a Daytona Beach native who met Williams backstage after a Washington state concert in 1985 and married him in Missoula, Montana, in July 1990, had built a life in Tennessee centered on the outdoors and her family’s kitchen table. Even during a four-year separation beginning in 2007, the couple remained connected to their children before reconciling in 2011. After Katherine’s death, being “Mimi” to Beau and Audrey became the daily anchor of the Williams household in Springville.
When the news arrived from Florida in March 2022, Hank Williams Jr. and his 24-year-old son, country singer-songwriter Sam Williams, were left to bring Mary Jane home for a private service at Ridgeway Funeral Home in Paris, Tennessee, where Katherine’s widower, Tyler Dunning, served as one of the pallbearers.
Two days after his mother died in Jupiter, Sam Williams spoke publicly about the woman who had held their household together since his sister’s crash, recalling how she could harvest a ten-point buck in the woods and fix dinner for her grandchildren on the same afternoon.
Hank Williams Jr. later shared a quiet tribute to the thirty-eight years they had spent together since meeting in 1985, noting that her love continued on in the hearts of their son Sam, their grandsons Beau and Tennyson, and their granddaughter Audrey Jane.
Rather than retreating from the Henry County community where both losses were felt so acutely, the father and son stayed close to the family’s Tennessee roots and to Tyler Dunning’s household. The family directed memorial contributions in Mary Jane’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, while Sam channeled the back-to-back losses of his sister and mother into his October 2022 deluxe album project, *Glasshouse Children: Tilted Crown*.
The two young children carry the family’s names directly into the next generation. According to family records from Paris, Tennessee, Beau Weston was named in honor of his uncle Sam, while little Audrey Jane shares her middle name with her grandmother Mary Jane and her first name with Hank Williams Jr.’s mother.
Years after the afternoon in Jupiter when no family member was in the room to hold Mary Jane’s hand, Beau Weston and Audrey Jane are growing up in Tennessee surrounded by their grandfather, their uncle Sam, and the stories of the grandmother they called Mimi.
