On the afternoon of October 12, 1997, John Denver took off from the Monterey Peninsula Airport in a newly purchased, experimental Rutan Long-EZ aircraft. At 53, he was a highly experienced pilot with over 2,700 hours of flight time. He found profound peace in the air, using aviation as a quiet retreat from the relentless pressures of a global music career.
His final flight over California’s Monterey Bay would not be undone by unpredictable weather or a sudden engine explosion. Instead, the tragedy was rooted in a quiet, mechanical design flaw, built into the fiberglass plane long before Denver ever sat in the cockpit.
The Long-EZ had been constructed by an amateur aviation enthusiast who made a highly specific, fatal change to the original blueprints. Rather than placing the fuel selector valve between the pilot’s legs—where it could be easily reached and monitored—the builder positioned it behind the pilot’s left shoulder.
